How to create a courtyard you’ll love!
April 26th, 2017 · Published to Shade Solutions
Courtyards have a lot of untapped potential, which should be utilising. If your courtyard is letting you down, now’s the perfect time to make a change.
I recently completed my new courtyard and I couldn’t be happier with the results. It took some time, but I was able to create a special place where I can relax and entertain friends. All it took was the addition of some plants, a few small cosmetic changes and the installation of a shade structure to create a natural outdoor space that I couldn’t be happier with.
So, if you’re ready to create a courtyard that you’ll love as much as I love mine, continue reading this post as today I’ll explain how you can do just that. You can thank me by purchasing shade structures for your courtyard from us at Global Shade.
1. Merge your indoors and outdoors
The best courtyards are those that seem to be an extension of indoor living spaces. In order to do this, I installed large bifold doors that seamlessly merge my indoors and outdoors. Moreover, I used the same tiles throughout my living area and my patio to make it look like one large area.
I realise that it may not be possible for everyone to merge their indoors and outdoors. However, if you can do so, you’ll surely own a courtyard that’s everyone’s envy. So, think of ways how you can create a seamless transition from your indoors to the outdoors. Think sliding doors, themed décor, same tile patterns and a constant colour scheme to do so.
2. Invest in shade structures
Secondly, a courtyard must always be shaded and this is especially true for us in Australia. My courtyard makes use of a several shade structures, which include outdoor umbrellas and a shade sail. The result? A cool and comfy courtyard where everyone can enjoy the outdoors without any risk of overexposure to the sun. Furthermore, I can even enjoy the outdoors even when it rains.
First and foremost, you should consider investing in shade structures for your courtyard. You can choose permanent shade structures such as awnings, canopies or shade sails (semi-permanent), or go with portable outdoor umbrellas.
At Global Shade, our outdoor umbrellas and shade sails are waterproof and offer up to 99% UVR protection. By choosing our shade structures, you can create a cool, protected outdoor space which you can enjoy all year round.
3. Create an outdoor lounge
My family and I spend a lot of time in our courtyard soaking up the weather or entertaining guests. As such, I have added comfortable outdoor furniture to convert my courtyard into an outdoor lounge.
Investing in outdoor furniture will also help you create a comfortable and relaxing lounge area. Furniture such as outdoor couches, loungers, hammocks, armchairs and daybeds work great in outdoor settings. Just ensure to place your outdoor furniture under your shade structure so they don’t get sun bleached or mouldy.
4. Plant cleverly
And finally, to finish my courtyard, I added several plants and trees. My courtyard includes both lively flowers and deep green foliage to create a cheerful, yet cool space. You can consider doing the same to your courtyard as well. Moreover, you can also add vegetables to your courtyard to make things productive.
Note however; be sure to choose plants that thrive in low light. This is because your courtyard will have some form of structure installed to supply shade. If you choose plants that require a lot of light, they may not survive.
Conclusion:
There are many things you can do to create a courtyard you’ll love. Some of these include adding plants, creating an outdoor lounge, merging the indoors and the outdoors and using shade structures. By adding these elements, you’re sure to be the proud owner of a wonderful and high utility courtyard.
